Adhesive composite resins that are light- or self-cured have benefits and drawbacks. The light-cured composite resin is more likely to detach from the gingival margin and cavity wall than the self-cured composite resin. The marginal enamel rods may also break as a result of the light-cured composite resin. Light-cured composite resin is recommended for veneers and shallow face restorations. For occlusal restorations and deeper cavities with a dentinal gingival margin, the self-cured composite resin is recommended. Hand-held light-emitting devices called dental composite light curing units are used to cure photo-activated polymer-based restorative materials. Composite curing lights have advanced significantly over time, and similar to restorative materials, significant modifications may be observed in their size, form, power, source, and other aspects.
