Cone beam computed tomography, or CBCT, is a kind of CT scan that builds three-dimensional images of a patient's teeth, jaw, mouth, neck, ears, nose, and throat using X-rays. During the scan, a single projection image known as a "basis" image is produced by moving an X-ray beam in the shape of a cone around the patient's head. Software uses the photos, which are slightly offset from one another, to create projection data. CBCT scans are quick and painless. In endodontics, CBCT images—both axial and cross-sectional—are essential for assessing the tooth's morphology, including the number and location of canals, the size and degree of calcification in the pulp chamber, the direction and curvature of the root, fractures, iatrogenic defects, and the degree of dental caries.
